Kid Jam & Lunch

Where:   Chapulepec Too in Northwest Denver (map)
When:   Every Tuesday 11am-1pm

The Kid Jam & Lunch is an opportunity for children 6 and under to dance, and play a real drum set, keyboard, guitar, and other instruments. The inaugural session (4/8/08) had a great turn out! Around 25 children (6 and under) came ready to eat and play.

The menu is a simple selection of classic children’s fare made healthy. A choice of all white meat chicken nuggets, homemade mac’ & cheese, or PB&J on honey wheat bread and each choice is served with fresh fruit slices, either milk or juice and a ginger snap cookie for $4. The adult lunch menu includes 3 beef tacos or 3 vegetarian bean tostadas and a soda or juice for $6 (or alcoholic beverage for $2 more).

The Kid Jam idea originated as a result of the owners loving little kids! Alice Krantz, one of the owners, first wanted to host a kids disco after watch little kids dance at a wedding. But, the Pec has never been known for disco, and jazz is not very inspiring for dance. Anna Krantz, Alice’s daughter, suggested adding instruments to the event. Having been raised in a jazz club, Anna values the exposure that she had with both instruments and musicians at such a young age. “Although I never became a musician, I have such a respect and appreciation for the people who make beautiful music” says Anna of her experience. The Krantz family has always tried to educate youth about music and jazz in particular. The original Pec has hosted both high school and college students studying jazz and has even been honored by the Mayor’s office for educating youth. Thanks to the size of the second location, they are able to educate a much younger audience.

The success of this program has prompted the Pec Too to host BIRTHDAY PARTIES as well. There are two birthday packages. The first package includes the use of the club and the instruments for an hourly fee. The second birthday package also includes food+drinks, priced per person. Choose either a "jam session" or "disco" theme - with disco ball, of course. Birthday parties can be booked for anytime on Saturdays. Contact Anna at 720-883-5043 for more info.

Fascinating history of the original El Chapultepec:

Chapultepec Too is an expansion of the original El Chapultepec in LoDo. The original ‘Pec’ is rich in history. It is one of the oldest bars in Denver, arguably the oldest still in operation with the same liquor license. Opened the day after prohibition ended and still running El Chapultepec has seen a lot of change in the neighborhood. The current owner, Jerry Krantz, took over for his father-in-law over 50 years ago. In those days it was a one of many neighborhood bars with in a few blocks. There were mariachis entertaining at night. In the mid 70’s immigration came and hauled the band out. Jerry replaced them with world-class jazz musicians. Since that day dozens of renowned jazz musicians have graced the stage including, each of the original Woody Herman Band members, Al Grey, Red Holloway, Elle Fitzgerald, and on and on.

About 10 years ago, when Coors Field was built, the neighborhood underwent a dramatic transformation into what is there today, LoDo. Old warehouse were renovated into nightclubs, abandoned whorehouses were made into restaurants, abandoned hotels turned into lofts. El Chapultepec stays the same. However, the clientele is a little bit different. The parking is farther away then is used to be and the crowd is generations younger nowadays. This is why the Chapultepec Too was originated. At the new location there is plenty of parking, seating galore and room to roam. The schedule accommodates all types of jazz including be-bop, fusion, big band, blues, Latin jazz, funk, acid jazz, and more of those good old standards.
