Teaching Kids Safety around Strangers |

[Editorial published 8/14/08]
Hi Everybody,
I had been reluctant to teach my kids about "stranger danger" thinking the topic was too scary. My attitude changed last spring when my friend's daughter was lured away by a predator (she was recovered unharmed). The next day I acquired The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers. It is a good introduction for kids ages 2-5.
I also acquired the Stranger Safety DVD that is advertised on TV. This is the video created by the founders of Baby Einstein and America's Most Wanted. It features the "Safe-Side Super Chick" with the funny hair. I've seen the video with my kids and think IT IS EXCELLENT! (I've shared it with other families, who also recommend it highly.)
Kids enjoy the wackiness in this non-scary video as they learn how to find help if separated, how to respond to odd requests from strangers and people they don't know well, and other important aspects of "staying on the Safe Side". Just a couple weeks after watching the video, I was accidentally separated from my son — he found help safely using the method and lingo from the video.
Now that school is around the corner, there will be a lot of new adults and situations in my son's world. I plan to watch the DVD again with him this week. I hope my daughter is now old enough to understand it too.
The Stranger Safety DVD is a Must Have for families with kids ages 3+. If your family isn't yet "on the Safe Side", I encourage you to get this DVD from Amazon*, watch it with your kids and share it with other families.
Thank you and be safe!
..Jill
